How Much Term Life Insurance Do You Really Need?

Most families in Houston either have too little life insurance — or they're paying for more than they need. After 32 years as an independent life insurance broker, I've seen both mistakes cost families dearly.

The good news? Calculating the right amount isn't complicated once you know what to look for.

The DIME Method: A Simple Starting Point

Financial planners often use the DIME formula to estimate life insurance needs:

  • D — Debt: Add up all your debts (mortgage, car loans, credit cards, student loans)
  • I — Income: Multiply your annual income by the number of years your family needs support (typically 10–15 years)
  • M — Mortgage: Include your outstanding mortgage balance if not already counted in debt
  • E — Education: Estimate future college costs for each child

Add those four numbers together and you have a solid baseline for your coverage amount.

Why Term Length Matters as Much as Coverage Amount

Choosing a 10-year term when you have a 20-year mortgage is a common and costly mistake. Your coverage should outlast your largest financial obligations.

Common term lengths and when they make sense:

  • 10-year term: Best for people close to retirement with minimal debt
  • 15-year term: Good for families with younger children and a mortgage under 15 years remaining
  • 20-year term: The most popular choice — covers the mortgage and gets kids through college
  • 30-year term: Ideal for young families just starting out, locking in low rates while healthy

The Independent Broker Advantage

Here's something most people don't know: every insurance company prices risk differently. One carrier might charge a 45-year-old non-smoker $85/month for a $500,000 policy. Another carrier might charge $62/month for the exact same coverage.

As an independent broker, I shop all 15+ carriers I represent to find you the best rate for your specific health profile. A captive agent (one who works for a single company like State Farm or Allstate) can only offer you their company's rates.

Health Matters More Than You Think

Your health classification at the time you apply determines your premium for the entire term. The difference between "Preferred Plus" and "Standard" rates can be 40–60%.

This is why I do field underwriting before you ever fill out an application. I ask the right questions upfront so we apply to the carrier most likely to give you the best health classification — not the one with the flashiest TV commercials.

What About Living Benefits?

Modern term life policies often include living benefit riders at no extra cost. These allow you to access a portion of your death benefit while still alive if you're diagnosed with:

  • A terminal illness (typically 12–24 months to live)
  • A critical illness (heart attack, stroke, cancer)
  • A chronic illness (inability to perform 2 of 6 daily living activities)

This is a game-changer. Your life insurance policy becomes a financial safety net for life events — not just death.

The Bottom Line

The right amount of term life insurance depends on your specific situation: your income, debts, family size, and health. There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

What I can tell you is this: the cost of getting it wrong is too high. A $500,000 20-year term policy for a healthy 40-year-old in Texas can cost less than $50/month. That's less than most people spend on streaming services.
